Most universities require that applicants whose first language is not English, or who were educated in a country where English is not normally the language of instruction, write or take language tests. Each institution has its own requirements, which are subject to change. More stringent requirements can apply for certain programs. It is in the applicant’s best interest to contact the universities directly for more information.

Note: After September 30, 2006, the computer-based version of the TOEFL test (TOEFL CBT) will no longer be offered. The TOEFL is gradually introducing the Internet-based version of the TOEFL test – TOEFL iBT. In areas where the TOEFL iBT is not yet available, the paper-based version of the TOEFL test will continue to be offered. TOEFL CBT scores are valid for two years from the administration date.

The minimum number of years to waive requirements is three years of full-time study with satisfactory academic standing in an English-language school system (where the primary language of instruction and evaluation is English), with acceptable grades in English and other humanities/social science courses from secondary school. Some programs may also require 4U English.

If an English facility test is required, students will be exempt from also having to include a 4U English (ENG4U/EAE4U) in their admission average, provided six other acceptable 4U credits are presented.

Students must arrange for original test scores to be sent directly from the testing centre to the UOIT Registrar’s Office.
International students currently studying in Ontario, who have received an offer of admission to the university, can also choose to satisfy their English language proficiency requirement by registering for UOIT's internal English language proficiency test. Successful completion of this test will satisfy the English language proficiency requirement for UOIT. Students who do not meet the university's minimum English language proficiency requirement on this test will automatically receive an offer of admission to UOIT's English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program. Upon completion of level 10 of this program, students will be permitted to enter into their university program directly.
